En 1961 el cantante de soul Al "TNT" Braggs fue el primero en grabar Cigarettes and Coffee. Sin embargo, la canción fue popularizada en 1966 por un mito del soul, el estadounidense Otis Redding. El tema aparece en el cuarto disco de Redding, The Soul Album.
